Divine services on Tuesday of the first week of the Great Lent

“Lent is coming, mother of chastity...” is a stichera of the Lenten Triodion. These words show a completely new dimension of the Lent, is sometimes hidden from the view.

Having created the world as a place of unity and perfection, the Lord appointed a man to be the ruler over His creation. According to God’s plan, it was through the man that the world became perfected. However, due to the sin of first people, the unity was destroyed and the primordial order was abolished. That is why “the whole creation will groan and suffer” until the man turns to his Creator and submits his will to the will of God.

On the days of the Great Lent, the Lord calls us all to look into our hearts and see the tragic and comprehend the colossal division in our nature. “I do not do the good that I want, but I do the evil that I do not want,” says St. Apostle Paul.

You can overcome this split only by subordinating all areas of your life to the will of God. The period of the Great Lent, which draws a person out of the sinful world and immerses him in a mystical life of Church, is the most favorable time to strengthen one’s will, saturate the heart with the word of the Lord and become a Christian walking to the Heavenly Father.

On March 19, the Bishop of Sergiev Posad and Dmitrov Kirill, Rector of the Moscow Theological Academy, officiated the Matins, Hours and the Vespers on Tuesday of the first week of the Great Lent at the Intercession Academic Church co-served by the academic clergy.
