Structure of the Academy

The rector of the Moscow Theological Academy is appointed by a decree of the Holy Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia with reference to a statement of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church.

The Rector directs the Moscow Theological Academy and Seminary in accordance with the Academic Charter, with the help of deputies (vice-rectors), who are approved by His Holiness the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia.

The Rector affirms the internal working schedule and regulations, delineates the functions of the structural subdivisions and the official duties of the employees of the Moscow Theological Academy, the Choir Director's School and School of Iconography. The rector also, insofar as his duties require him, issues orders and instructions for the employees of the Moscow Theological Academy, the Choir Director's School and School of Iconography.

The Academic Council of the Academy is the collegial body responsible for the general management of the educational and research activities of the Academy, it defines the priorities and principles of the Academy's development, ensures he sustainability of the Academy's activity and seeks to improve the efficiency of the educational and training process.

The Academic Council of the Academy includes the Rector of the Academy, who is its Chairman, the Vice-Rectors, Chairman of the Academic and Methodological Council, the heads of the Department of Distance Learning and the Choir Director's and Iconographers schools, the head of the library, heads and secretaries of the departments, full-time professors and associate professors of the Academy.

Pro-rectors, the secretary of the Academic Council, the heads of the Department of Distance Learning, the Choir Director's and Iconography Schools, Rector's assistants, make up the administration of the Moscow Theological Academy.

The vice-rector of educational work organizes the educational process and educational and methodical work in the Moscow Theological Academy. The acting vice-rector for educational work is priest Paul Lizgunov.

The Vice-Rector of Theological Research organizes the academic life at the Moscow Theological Academy. Since 2012, this position has been held by Archpriest Alexander Zadornov.

The Vice-Rector of discipline is responsible for the general management of the educational process at the Moscow Theological Academy. Since 2018, this position has been held by hieromonk Mark (Svyatogorov). In his job of Vice-Rector of Discipline he is assisted by a senior assistant to the Vice-Rector of Discipline - since 2015, the acting senior assistant is hieromonk Vyacheslav (Sorokin). Help also comes from the assistants to the Vice-Rector of Discipline, who carry out direct educational and organizational work with students. The Vice-rector of Discipline together with his assistants and course mentors form a pedagogical council, which is accountable before the administrative meeting.

The Secretary of the Academic Council prepares the meetings of the Academic Council, keeps the minutes of the meetings and supervises the execution of their decisions. In 2010, Hegumen Adrian (Pashin) was appointed Secretary of the Academic Council.

The head of the postgraduate programme generally controls the activities of the postgraduate programme, supervises academic guides in their preparation of candidates and their dissertation research and the implementation of an individual postgraduate study plan.  In 2012, hegumen Adrian (Pashin) was appointed head of the postgraduate program (Candidate's for Doctoral Programme).

The Chair of the Choir Director's School heads the Choir Director's School of the Moscow Theological Academy. Since September 29, 2016, hegumen Lazarus (Gnativ) has been the head of the Choir Director's School .

The Chair of the School of Iconography is in charge ofthe activities of the Iconography School of the Moscow Theological Academy. Since 1996, the position has been held by Archimandrite Luke (Head of the Iconography School of the Moscow Theological Academy).

The Head of the Distance Learning Department manages the Distance Learning Department of the Moscow Theological Academy, along with its branches. Since 1997, Archpriest Sergius Maratkanov has been the head of the DLD. The Deputy Head of the DLD is Archpriest Sergius Zabelich.

The Rector's Assistant in external affairs curates representative events in the Moscow Theological Academy. Since 2018, the assistant to the rector of the MThA in external affairs is priest Alexander Kuznetsov.

The head of the public relations department and press secretary of the MThA represents the rector and administration of the Academy in contacts with the media and directs the activities of the MThA press office. Since September 2018 the position has been held by S. P. Malyarov.

The Rector also appoints the:

  • Spiritual Guide of the Moscow Theological Academy - Archimandrite Hilarion (Forkavets);
  • Sacristan of the Academy Church of the Protection - Archimadrite Hilarion (Forkavets);
  • Sacristan of the Academy Church of the Protection - Hieromonk Barnabas (Losev);
  • Sacristan of the Semibary Church of the St. John Climacus - Archimandrite Michael (Borei).
