The rector of the Moscow Theological Academy is appointed via a decree of His Holiness the Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia based on a decision of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church. The Rector manages the Moscow Theological Academy in accordance with the Academy’s charter, with the assistance of deputies (vice-rectors), who are approved in their roles by His Holiness the Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia. The rector establishes the internal schedule and the working order of the Academy, the scope of responsibilities of departments, the duties of staff members and, within the realm of his jurisdiction, he generates orders and directives adherence to which is mandatory for employees of the Moscow Theological Academy.

Biography

Bishop Cyril was born on the 29th of July of 1969 in Leningrad in a family of public servants. From 1976 until 1984 he studied at Secondary School number 79 of the Kalinin district of the city of Leningrad.

From 1984 until 1992 he studied at the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute within the department of “Mechanics and Management processes”. After completing his undergraduate studies, he carried on with postgraduate education within the same department and in 1995 he successfully defended his PhD thesis, thus becoming a Candidate of Technical Sciences.

From 1995 until 1998 he studied at the Saint Petersburg Theological Seminary and from 1998 until 2002 at the Saint Petersburg Theological Academy.

On the 26th of March 1999, while doing his first year of studies at the Academy he was tonsured as a monk in the Academy church. He was ordained as a hierodeacon on the 28th of August 1999 and as a hieromonk on the 3rd of June 2002. He completed his studies at the Saint Petersburg Theological Academy with a PhD titled “The Role of Elderhood in the Teaching and Life of the Church”.

From 2002 until 2011 Bishop Cyril was a professor at the St. Petersburg Theological Seminary and Academy. From December 2004 and until June of 2011 he was the dean of the faculty of foreign students. He served as an academic advisor for seminary students writing their senior thesis and for academy students writing their PhD papers. He also took pastoral care of Academy church parishioners and Academy students.

Since 2008 he has served as the spiritual director of the “Children’s Mission” volunteer movement which started at the Academy. Professors and students of the St. Petersburg Theological Academy organized volunteer work aimed at the religious enlightenment of children at orphanages and foster homes within the St. Petersburg eparchy.

In the autumn of 2011, he was relieved of his duties as professor at the St. Petersburg Theological Seminary and Academy and was appointed as a cleric of the Church of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God in the village of Vyritsa, Leningrad Oblast.

From 2011 until 2014 he was a doctorate student at the Saint Cyril and Methodius Institute for Postgraduate studies. His doctor’s thesis was “The Teaching on Matter Within the Sacramental-Anthropological Realm in the Works of Alexandrian school Theologians, the Great Cappadocians and St. Maximus the Confessor”.

On the 12th of June, 2015 His Holiness, the Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia Kirill presented hieromonk Cyril with a doctor’s cross. From 2016 until 2022, Bishop Cyril taught a self-authored course on Christian anthropology for master’s students of the Russian Christian Humanitarian Academy.

In accordance with a decree of the Holy Synod from the 16-17 of July 2020 (Journal №41) he was appointed rector of the Nikolo-Ugreshskaya Theological Seminary.

In accordance with a decree of the Holy Synod from the 23-24 of September 2021 (Journal №89) he was appointed vicar of the Nikolo-Ugreshsky Stavropegial Monastery.

On the 18th of July, 2022 during Liturgy in the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius he was elevated to the clerical rank of hegumen and awarded a hegumen’s staff by His Holiness Patriarch Kirill.

In accordance with a decree of the Holy Synod from the 25th of August, 2022 (Journal №68) Bishop Cyril was appointed rector of the Moscow Theological Academy, being relieved of his duties as rector of Nikolo-Ugreshsky Theological Seminary and as vicar of the Nikolo-Ugreshsky Stavropegial Monastery.

Since the 25th of August, 2022 he is a member of the Synodal Committee on canonization of Saints (as per his position as rector).

On the 30th of August, 2022 he was elevated to the clerical rank of archimandrite by the Chancellor of the Moscow Patriarchy, Metropolitan Dionysius of Voskresensk at Novospassky Stavropegial Monastery. ссылка .

He was proclaimed as a bishop on the 20th of September 2022 in the Throne Hall of Christ the Saviour Cathedral in Moscow. On the 21st of September he was consecrated as a Bishop during liturgy at Conception of the Theotokos Stavropegial Monastery in Moscow. The liturgy was led by His Holiness Patriarch Kirill.
