Festive services on Day of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross held at the Academy

Today’s holiday is the one of twelve which is not dedicated to the Gospel events, but to a memorable day in a church history. In 326, St. Helena, Equal-to-the-Apostles Empress went to Holy Land and discovered a large number of places associated with the earthly life of the Savior. By the God’s Will she was allowed to excavate this terrible instrument of execution. The Patriarch of Jerusalem Macarius accompanied by the clergy raised the Cross and the standing nearby Christians exclaimed "Lord have mercy!"
Despite a cross had been a shameful tool of death, it became a symbol of the triumph of life and Resurrection. The Savior through His sacrifice on the cross sanctified him and turned him into Life-giving.
On September 26, the Bishop of Zvenigorod Theodorite, Rector of the Moscow Theological Academy, performed a festive all-night vigil at the academic church of the Intercession of Theotokos including an office of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.
Во время чтения девятого часа украшенный цветами Крест клирики академического храма перенесли с жертвенника на престол. Полиелей на утрени совершили в алтаре при открытых царских вратах. После Евангелия молящиеся прославили Воскресшего Христа пением пасхальной песни «Воскресение Христово видевше».
После великого славословия, во время пения «Святый Боже» епископ Феодорит взял Крест с престола и с идущими впереди свещеносцами, диаконами и священнослужителями вынес его на середину храма. Духовенство и молящиеся в храме трижды спели тропарь празднику с земными поклонами. После чего епископ Феодорит совершил чин воздвижения Креста: под пение «Господи, помилуй» он поочередно осенил Крестом все стороны света. На стихирах верующие подходили ко Кресту и ректор помазывал их освященным елеем.
On September 27, on the day of the feast, Bishop Theodorite celebrated the Divine Liturgy in the Intercession Church of the Academy co-served by ordained teachers and students.
After reading the Gospel, the Rector of the Academy addressed an assembly with a sermon in which he pointed out the inability of entering the glory of the Savior's Cross without a spiritual struggle.
Перед Причастием проповедь произнес игумен Лазарь (Гнатив).
По заамвонной молитве владыка ректор, священники и диаконы спели славление Кресту Господню.
Песнопения за богослужениями исполняли мужской хор под управлением иеромонаха Нестора (Волкова) и женский хор под управлением С.П. Боровинской.
