The Academy honored the memory of Deacon Sergey Trubachev

On October 24 and 25, the Bishop of Zvenigorod Theodorite performed Sunday services in a seminary church of St. John Climacus. During the Liturgy, the choir performed liturgical chants by Deacon Sergey Trubachev in commemoration of 25 years since his death.

This day the Church honours saint martyrs Prov, Tarakh and Andronicus, who suffered for Christ in 304. According to their hagiography, they refused to offer pagan sacrifices and were executed. Particles of St. Prov, Tarakh and Andronicus’s relics laid in a foundation of the altar in St. John Climacus church.

In today’s passage from the Gospel of Luke an apostle recalls how the Savior raised a Nain widow’s son. After the reading of the Holy Gospel, Bishop Theodorite addressed an assembly with his archpastoral word. In a sermon he noticed the significance of physical and spiritual death citing an example of saint martyrs Prov, Tarakh and Andronicus and how important it is for every Christian to be ready for death.

This day also commemorates the 25th anniversary of the death of Deacon Sergey Trubachev. He was a famous 20th century church composer, an outstanding teacher, a founder and a teacher of the Chorister’s Department at the Russian Academy of Music named after the Gnesins. Deacon Sergey took an active part in a life and development of a chanting school at the Moscow Theological Academy. He shared his rich experience with teachers and students, attended rehearsals and led master classes on choir conducting. Deacon Sergey left a great musical heritage of an easily recognizable style and a wide singing repertoire, which sounds in many churches all over Russia.

Deacon Sergius often served in a seminary church of St. John Climacus. Graduate students of the Academy remember him as a spiritual, modest and hardworking person and an earnest priest.
