New textbook on Theology "Holy Fathers and Teachers of the Church"
The Publishing House "Poznanie" released the third volume of the anthology "Holy Fathers and Teachers of the Church: Patristic Works of the V-VII centuries." The volume consists of the writings of Greek, Latin and Syrian Fathers of the Church and church writers, who lived in the era of Christological controversies (V-VII centuries). There are excerpts from such famous Orthodox polemic theologians as St. Cyril of Alexandria and St. Theodorite of Cyrus, Leontius of Byzantium and Leontius of Jerusalem, St. Emperor Justinian the Great and St. Sophronius of Jerusalem, excerpts from the Corpus Areopagiticum and the works of St. Maximus the Confessor. Works of Western and Eastern ascetic writers presented by legacy of St. Diadochus Photikiosky, Barsanuphius the Great, Dorotheos of Gazsky, Nilus of Sinai, John Climacus, John Cassian, Benedict of Nursia and Isaac the Syrian. In addition, there are extrcts from Latin church writers of the 5th-8th centuries, such as St. Vincent of Lerinsky and Fulgeny of Russia, St. Pope Leo and Gregory the Great, St. Bede the Venerable.
Selected fragments were chosen due to their importance in revealing theological thoughts and its place in dogmatic disputes of the early Church. The main aim of the textbook is to show the diversity of theological subjects, literary forms and genres in the works of Fathers and teachers of the Church.
The anthology includes some new translations of St. Cyril of Alexandria, Blessed Theodoret of Kirsky, Leontius of Jerusalem, Venerable Maximus the Confessor, St. Barsanuphius the Great, Venerable John Cassian and St. Isaac the Syrian.
The textbook prepared by such leading professors and teachers of Patrology and Christian literature of the Moscow Theological Academy as A.I. Sidorov, A.R. Fokin, P.K. Dobrotsvetov, M.G. Kalinin, Deacon Sergiy Kozhukhov, Hieromonk Theodore (Yulaev). The fourth volume of this anthology dedicated to the Byzantine Church Fathers and Church writers of the 8th - 15th centuries is going to be published next year.
