The Academy hosted the conference “Royal Palaces: from history to the project of restoration and adaptation” was held at the MDA
On November 26, 2024, a scientific and practical conference “Royal Palaces: from history to the project of restoration and adaptation” took place at the Elizabeth Hall of the Moscow Theological Academy.
Hegumen Gerasim (Dyachkov), Deputy Rector of the Moscow Theological Academy for administrative and economic work, opened a conference with his welcoming speech. After that, a word was given to AsyaV. Engovatova, PhD of Historical Sciences. In collaboration with A.V. Yaganov, a senior researcher of the Department for the Preservation of Archaeological Heritage at the Institute of Archeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences and senior researcher at the Department for the Preservation of Archaeological Heritage of the Institute of Archeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and E.I. Ruzaeva they presented a report on “Archaeological research of the front porches of the building of the Royal Palaces and service buildings of the palace complex in 2015–2024.” The speakers shared the results of archaeological excavations carried out on the territory of the Moscow Theological Academy by the Institute of Archeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences and answered questions from conference participants.
Hegumen Josiah (Sidunov), an economist and director of the unified customer service of the Holy Trinity St. Sergius Lavra, presented next report “Fragments of the water supply system of the Trinity-Sergius Monastery in the XVI–XVII centuries near the building of the Royal Palaces”. The monastic water supply system has not previously been analyzed in this view before, so the information was of the great value.
O.N. Glazunova and S.V. Borzova, research staff of the Archeology of Moscow Rus' Department at the Institute of Archeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, gave a report "Ovens of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra of the second half of the XVII century". The report presented the results of an archaeological study that made it possible to recreate rare stove tiles, which were probably made in local workshops.
M.A. Kapitonova, a specialist at the Department of Preservation of Archaeological Heritage of the Institute of Archeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, presented a report on “Reconstruction of the furnace from the Royal Palaces according to research data from the Moscow Region archaeological expedition in the Holy Trinity St. Sergius Lavra in 2023.” It mentioned two complete tile sets from two stoves of XVII–XVIII centuries. Studying the patterns of tile marks made it possible to completely signify some features of Lavra production and reconstruct the stove decor.
Pavel Yu. Rachkovsky, an architect of the architectural and restoration workshop "Arkada-NT", a member of the Union of Architects of Russia, presented the report “We should make this building from Lavra materials...”, which was based on archival contract materials and construction technologies in the Holy Trinity St. Sergius Lavra.
Natalia V. Grigorieva, First deputy director at the Sergiev Posad State Historical and Art Museum-Reserve, reported on “Prospects for the development of the Sergiev Posad Museum-Reserve within the framework of the implementation of the concept of spatial development of Sergiev Posad”. The concept of the Sergiev Posad Museum-Reserve was originally developed by priest Pavel Florensky, a teacher at the Moscow Theological Academy, and the son of an academic professor, P.N. Kapterev. The conference got aquanted with the prospects for the upcoming museum activities in 2025–2030.
Egenia Yu. Suvorova Report, PhD in Art History, Associate Professor at the Department of History and Theory of Church Art of the Moscow Theological Academy, Head of the department at the Sergiev Posad State Historical and Art Museum-Reserve, opened the second part of the conference with her report on “Technological features of creating Victoria medallions of Emperor Peter the Great for decorating the “dining room” (“royal office”) of the Royal Palace”. She spoke about the works of outstanding masters who laid the foundation for medallions decorating the Elizabethan Hall of the Royal Palaces.
Olga S. Voskresenskaya, Head of the restoration department at the Museum of Christian Art “Church and Archaeological Cabinet” of the Moscow Theological Academy, a senior lecturer at the Department of History and Theory of Church Art, continued with a report “Activities of the restoration department of the Museum of Christian Arts “Church and Archaeological Cabinet”: history and modernity”. She traced the history of the museum restoration department from the time of nun Juliania (Sokolova) and E.S. Churakov to nowadays.
The conference was concluded by the Ekaterina L. Puganova’s report, a curator of the exhibition of the Museum of Christian Art “Church and Archaeological Cabinet” of the Moscow Theological Academy, on the topic “Church and archaeological cabinet: history and modernity.” In her speech, she briefly recalled the history of the museum at the Moscow Theological Academy since XIX century and told about the modern life of the academic museum.
Summing up, Hegumen Gerasim (Dyachkov) thanked the speakers for the presented scientific researches and all participants for their active presence at the conference. The event made it possible to share some important facts from the history of the Royal Palaces, to discuss the problems of studying the palace complexes of the time and outline prospects for the further study of the Holy Trinity St. Sergius Lavra.
