The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick at the Intercession Academic Church
The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is one of sacraments of the Orthodox Church. The priest seven times anoints a forehead, nostrils, cheeks, lips, chest and hands of the faithful with consecrated oil in a cruciform manner. At the same time, special prayers, the Apostle and the Gospel are read.
It is also called the Unction as it is usually performed by a council of priests. The clergy use oil as it has been not only a food product, but also medicine for centuries.
The establishment of the sacrament goes back to apostolic times, when they anointed the sick with oil and prayed to the Lord for his healing.
Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven (James 5: 14-15).
On April 28, Archimandrite Hilarion (Porkavets) headed The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick at the Intercession Academic Church co-served by teachers and students in the priesthood.
