The All-Russian Scientific Postgraduate Conference «Theology: History and Modernity»

On May 12, 2023, postgraduate students took place at the All-Russian Scientific Postgraduate Conference "Theology: History and Modernity", which was held on the basis of the St. Andrew's Stavropegial Monastery in Moscow. The conference brought together representatives of four higher theological educational institutions of the Russian Orthodox Church such as the General Church Postgraduate and Doctoral studies named after Sts. Cyril and Methodius, the Moscow Theological Academy, the St. Petersburg Theological Academy and the Sretenskaya Theological Academy. 

The Bishop of Zvenigorod Kirill, Rrector of the Moscow Theological Academy, opened the conference with a welcoming speech:

I greet you, dear participants and I hope that with God's help and your efforts it will be interesting and useful. Each of you will be able to present your research materials as well as see and hear the results of other researches. You will see their progress and might even learn from each other. I hope that this stage will become an important step in writing your theses, which should be creative, deep and show the seriousness of your works, which will represent not only you, but also the Moscow Theological Academy as the leading theological school of the Russian Orthodox Church. May God's blessings be with us.

Then the conference participants were greeted by Hegumen Dionysius (Shlenov), Abbot of the St. Andrew’s, Head of the Postgraduate Department of the Moscow Theological Academy.

After the welcoming speeches, a plenary session started. Hegumen Dionysius (Shlenov) gave a report on the “Extraterritorial measures of the Constantinople Patriarchate in relation to schismatics and their criticism.” Next, Bishop of Amur and Chegdomynsk Nikolay presented his report on the "Education of the youth based on the axiological Orthodox values ​​ (the experience of network cooperation between the Amur diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church and secular educational institutions)". Then, Hieromonk Theodore (Yulaev), the MThA lecturer, made a speech on the “Fragments of the Scholium on the Incarnation of the Only Begotten” by St. Cyril of Alexandria in an epistel “In Defense of the Three Chapters” by Fakundus of Germian and “Philaletus” by Severus of Antioch. Subdeacon Vartan Poghosyan, a specialist in the field of national and religious relations of the Russian and New Nakhichevan diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church, concluded the plenary session with a report on “The 850th anniversary of the death of St. Narcess Shnoralli (Blessed)».

After the brake, the participants could present their reports in three sections:

  • Theology and Biblical Studies;
  • Church History, Church Art and Philology; 
  • Liturgics and Canon Law.
