The defense of PhD thesis at the Academy

On September 15, 2022, Associate Professor Archpriest Oleg Mumrikov, Deputy Chairman of the Dissertation Council, chaired the meeting of the MThA Candidate Dissertation Council No. 1 (includes Departments of Biblical studies, Theology and Philology (ancient languages). 

At the first session, Hierodeacon Maxim (Sudakov) defended his dissertation on "The Ascetic Teaching of Martiry-Sakhdona in the Light of the Orthodox Tradition".

At the beginning of the meeting, the applicant made a brief description of his work.

After that, a scientific adviser Professor Hegumen Dionysius (Shlenov) gave his review. Then Associate Professor M.V. Kovshov, a scientific secretary of the Dissertation Council, read reviews from the Moscow Theological Academy and the Orthodox St. Tikhon’s Humanitarian University.

After that, a word was given to official opponents - Aleksey Vl. Muravyov, Dr. of Historical Sciences, PhD of Philosophical Sciences, Associate Professor of the National Research University Higher School of Economics and Pavel Vl. Kuzenkov, PhD of Historical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Theology Department at the Sevastopol State University, Director of the Scientific and Educational Center "International Political Studies of the Greater Mediterranean" of the Institute of Social Sciences and International Relations at the Sevastopol State University.

The applicant responded to all comments. After that a scientific discussion took place.

Following the results of a secret ballot, members of the Dissertation Council recognized Hierodeacon Maxim (Sudakov) worthy of PhD degree in Theology.

The council decided to send a petition to His Holiness Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill to award Hierodeacon Maxim (Sudakov) PhD degree in Theology.

At the second meeting, Hieromonk Platon (Kudlasevich) presented his work on “The development of the Catholic doctrine of the veneration of the Mother of God in 1854-1965 in the light of the Russian theological criticism”.

At the beginning of the meeting, the applicant made a brief description of his work.

After that, a scientific adviser Associate Professor Priest Anthony Borisov gave his review. Then the scientific secretary of the Dissertation Council, Associate Professor M.V. Kovshov read reviews from the Moscow Theological Academy and the St. Petersburg Theological Academy.

After that, a word was given to official opponents - Archpriest Valentin Vasechko, Dr. of Theology, Deputy Chairman of the Educational Committee of the Russian Orthodox Church, Member of the Commission for the Development of Theological, Religious, Spiritual and Moral Education at the Council for Cooperation with Religious Associations under the President of the Russian Federation, Secretary of the Commission in Theology and Theological Education of the Inter-Council Presence, Associate Professor of the Faculty of Theology, Department of Systematic Theology and Patrology, Associate Professor of the Faculty of Additional Education, Department of Theology, St. Tikhon Orthodox University for the Humanities and Dmitry Igorevich Makarov, Dr of Philosophy, Associate Professor, Head of the Department of Biblical Studies and Theology of the Yekaterinburg Theological Seminary, Professor of the Department of Biblical Studies and Theology of the EDC.

At the third meeting, Priest Daniil Goryachev presented his thesis on the "Antinomia as priest Pavel Florensky’s philosophical and theological method".

At the beginning of the meeting, the applicant made a brief description of his work.

After that, a scientific advisor Associate Professor Pavel Kirillovich Dobrotsvetov, PhD in Philosophical Sciences, PhD in Theology, gave his review.

Then a scientific secretary of the Dissertation Council, Associate Professor M.V. Kovshov read reviews from the Moscow Theological Academy and the Nizhny Novgorod State Pedagogical University named after Kozma Minin.

After that, the word was given to official opponents - Mikhail Alexandrovich Maslin, Dr. of Philosophy, Professor, Honored Professor of the Department and Head of the Department of the History of Russian Philosophy, Faculty of Philosophy, Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov, and Priest Mikhail Legeev, PhD in Theology, Associate Professor of the Department of Theology at the St. Petersburg Theological Academy.

The applicant responded to all comments. After that a scientific discussion took place.

Following the results of a secret ballot, members of the Dissertation Council recognized Priest Daniil Goryachev worthy of PhD degree in Theology.

The council decided to send a petition to His Holiness Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill to award Priest Daniil Goryachev the PhD degree in Theology.
