The MThA icon painting faculty hosted church-wide advanced training courses on the “Theology of an icon”

On June 14–15, 2022, the Educational Committee of the Russian Orthodox Church and an icon-painting faculty of the Moscow Theological Academy conducted a church-wide advanced training program for teachers on the “Theology of an icon”.

Face-to-face courses gathered 42 representatives (leaders, methodologists and teachers) of 14 icon painting workshops as well as 5 representatives of church organizations.

Students hear a greeting word from Archpriest Maxim Kozlov, Chairman of the Educational Committee of the Russian Orthodox Church.

"The Theology of an icon" is included in the curriculum of the All-Church Standard for Training Icon Painters approved by the Holy Synod on December 29, 2020 (Journal No. 116).

Archimandrite Luka (Golovkov), Associate Professor and Dean of the Iconography and Church Art Faculty, highlighted the topical issues of teaching the "Theology of an icon", iconography and the specific language of an Orthodox icon.

Then, participants took a guided tour round the Museum of the Moscow Theological Academy “Church-Archaeological Cabinet”. All students received certificates of advanced training issued by the Educational Committee of the Russian Orthodox Church.

The courses were organised with a financial support from the Educational Committee. The grant "Improving the quality of education in the training programs for icon painters in theological educational institutions of the Russian Orthodox Church" by the Presidential Fund for Cultural Initiatives was achieved in 2022.

Priest Sergiy Gimonov, a system administrator of the Educational Committee and the Moscow Theological Academy, was responsible for the technical support of the courses.
