Among different political circumstances, first of all there was a need to gather disparate Slavic tribes into a single political and religious unity. So, it was not Prince Vladimir who made the choice of faith, but the Lord Himself, Who through the circumstances of life summoned him. The saint only opened his heart and took a step towards Christ.
