On October 28, the Department of Biblical Studies held an online scientific and theological seminar on \"The relationship between Divine and human in the Holy Scriptures.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Archpriest Oleg Mumrikov, Acting head of the Biblical Studies Department, opened a meeting. A chief moderator was Archpriest Alexander Timofeev, Head of the MThA Biblical Cabinet. In his introductory message he made participants acquainted with some organizational moments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At first, participants appointed M.V. Kovshov, Associate professor of the MThA Department of Biblical Studies and Perervin Theological Seminary, as a new scientific secretary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Priest Sergiy Fufayev, Lecturer and Researcher of the Biblical Studies Department, gave an introductory report on \"Are there primordial ideas-volitions in the Holy Scriptures?\" He presented the topic in the context of Orthodox teachings of such God\u2019s qualities as all-perfection, unlimitedness, immutability, simplicity, omniscience and omnipresence as well as in the context of a patristic concept of the world creation out of nothing. An author of the report emphasized that God foresaw the fall of man before the creation of the world. However, this does not mean that God has planned evil. In opposite Lord's foreknowledge of man's sin presupposes a corresponding Divine reaction to evil and the culmination of it was the Incarnation of the Son of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The priest Sergiy Fufayev\u2019s report aroused a lively a discussion and evokes a series of related topics. The discussion touched some questions mentioned at the Intercession Conference and the criticism voiced. The participants tried to clarify the concept of inspiration in modern Orthodox Theology and Biblical Studies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a result of a constructive scientific discussion, the participants came up with some preliminary conclusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First of all, a text does not exist without a reader, so the Holy Scripture also does not exist without a community which means the Church. In particular, negative biblical critics often rely on the Sola Scriptura principle. Divine Revelation is not instantaneous, it continues in history. The fullness of Revelation is given in the incarnate Word-Logos, but communion in Christ and with Christ continues throughout the history of the Church. A sacred history is thus the result of the mutual action of God and man and the Scripture becomes a reflection of this story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Secondly, a text does not exist not only without the reader, but also without its understanding. The Holy Spirit equally has to be present through an act of understanding. If a reader is not even to a small extent inspired by the Holy Spirit to understand the Holy Scriptures, then Bible makes an ordinary ancient book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
