On January 20 th Julia Matveeva, PhD in study of art, gave her first lecture on \u201cHeaven and fabrics:\niconography, liturgical practice, historical development\u201d which took place in the MThA library. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Julia\u2019s series of lectures \u201cFabrics of forgotten meanings in iconography, custom, tradition\u201d were\norganized by an embroidery department of an icon painting faculty of the Moscow Theological\nAcademy, a stitching shop \u201cSen\u201d and an MThA library.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lecturer told about the development and a prefiguration of liturgical fabrics such as veils. As\nJulia pointed out the veil of the altar (katapetasma) had been an image of the Holy Sepulcher stone\nand later signified the whole Church. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also Julia presented different types of church fabrics and described their symbolic meaning as the\ngrace of God and His divine intercession. We can find related images in iconography of an upper\npart of an apse or a dome. Later the symbols of the divine protection appeared in ciboriums and\ncanopies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
